Horst Vogel

Dr. Vogel’s research concentrates on elucidating the structure and function of membrane proteins. Together with his collaborators he made major contributions to the field such as: The first optical biosensor for probing label-free activation of G-protein coupled receptors; The first silicon chip for automated planar patch clamp measurements; Pioneering the investigation of membrane proteins by single-molecule spectroscopy and imaging in living cells; The first high-resolution crystal structure of a mammalian ligand-gated ion channel. The laboratory of Dr. Vogel’s is always active in transferring findings from fundamental research to practical applications by patenting, collaborating with industrial partners and creating start-up companies. Out of Dr. Vogel’s laboratory many university professors, industrial leaders and successful entrepreneurs evolved.
